Orchestra
The Fairfield Primary School Orchestra is open to all students in Grades 3-6 who are learning an instrument and have played for more than one year. Our performers include: cellists, violinists, flautists, recorder players, trumpets and keyboard players. Aural and performance skills are developed as students begin to develop an understanding of the subtleties of music and how to play differently to suit a particular style. Students gain a comprehensive understanding of what it means to perform in a group and collaborate to create harmonious sound. Performances are shared at assemblies, Fairfield Primary School events and, through our partnership with Thornbury High School, at Thornbury High School concerts.
Brass
The Fairfield Primary School Brass program consists of trumpet and trombone students. Students receive fortnightly tuition provided by instrumental teachers from Thornbury High School through our on-going music partnership. Together with deepening students’ instrumental skills, participation in the Brass Band deepens their understanding of rhythm, pitch, tempo, conventional notation and playing in time with others. Our Brass Band performance are Fairfield Primary School events and, through our partnership with Thornbury High School, at Thornbury High School concerts.
Choir
The Fairfield Primary School Choir is open to all students in Grades 4-6. Listening is an essential part of singing in a group. Together, students further develop and fine tune their listening skills, enabling them to sing in time with each other and create wonderful harmonies. Students gain an understanding of simple and complex rhythms, as well as exploring call and response, harmony and canons. Students warm up by exploring: singing major/minor scales, vowel sounds, warm up chants, songs and stretches.
