Orchestra and Brass News

Workshop and Rehearsal

The Fairfield orchestra and brass ensemble were invited to attend a special rehearsal at Thornbury High School on Thursday 6 October.  The rehearsal was organised to a very high standard. Five dedicated Thornbury Music department staff welcomed us on arrival and divided our students into three separate workshops. In the workshops, students played alongside the older students, going through pieces of music we have been working on this year. At the end of the workshops we all came together to play. It was a wonderful afternoon with the children performing so well together.

The Thornbury HS Concert

The good times continued on Tuesday evening as FPS orchestra was invited to be part of the Thornbury High School annual concert which took place at the Furlan Club. The students were ecstatic to be part of this wonderful event. The music included Glen Miller band pieces, Caribbean beats, salsa dances as well as some popular and Christmas favourites. The standard of musicianship at Thornbury is really incredible.

Congratulations to all the students for a wonderful performance.

Creating Community Connections

Thornbury High school Music teachers Sean and Marc have been working with the Fairfield students these past two years, providing trumpet and trombone instruments and lessons to 16 of our students free of charge as part of a community connections program. This valuable community program provides more music opportunities for our students and generates interests that they may pursue at high school level. It also fosters positive community relations between students in a multi age setting, allowing our orchestra and brass students to learn from the high school students, as well as professional sharing between us teachers.

GN-15Julian Lynch Cycles Around the Bay

For the third year in a row, Julian Lynch—a student in 6C—has participated in the Around the Bay bicycle ride, which raises funds for the Smith Family charity. This year he completed the challenging 135km ride from Geelong to Melbourne, against Sunday’s gale force winds.

Congratulations Julian on a magnificent physical effort and your efforts to support a needy charitable organisation.
