Northcote District Basketball Tournament

BoysBB2Three Fairfield PS teams entered the Northcote District Basketball tournament this year. The format of the competition begun with a round robin stage, followed by a semi-final and ended with a grand final. Fairfield had two boys teams entered and both showed remarkable improvement throughout the day. One team narrowly missed out on the semi-finals and the other team was beaten in the semi-finals by the eventual winners. Both teams can be proud of their efforts.

A big thank you to our parent volunteer Cameron Watson for his coaching. We also recognise grade six student Hugo Byron who, despite a broken wrist, was able to be involved by coaching one of the teams; he did an outstanding job coaching and managing his peers.

Our FPS girls basketball team was coached by parent volunteer Mel Brown, who also deserves a huge thank you for her coaching and organising a couple of practice sessions before the competition. These sessions clearly paid off as the girls ended up winning the tournament and played some very nice team basketball. It was a joy to watch the students cooperate and support each other and we wish them luck in the next stage of the competition.

Thank you also to Wendy Diamond for the magnificent effort that she put into the organisation of this day for our students. We also express our gratitude to the parents who transported and supervised children and were in attendance to encourage the students.

Table Tennis

Finally, I am sure many of you have been glued to the Olympics. Have you had a chance to see the speed and skill of the Table Tennis players? This year the Grade 5 students will have an opportunity to sharpen their skills with a four week unit of table tennis starting next Friday, 26 August. This is part of the grade 5 alternative sports program and is being run for the first time at Fairfield Primary School by Table Tennis Victoria. Who knows, this may be the beginning of a lifelong love of table tennis for some of our students.
