Grade 3/4 C&D held an exhibition on 14 – 15 July to showcase the houses they had built as part of our mathematics unit on space in term two.  We started this unit of work by looking at how things look from different perspectives using blocks.

  • Front view
  • Side views (left-hand side, right-hand side)
  • Bird’s eye view

We learnt to draw 2D representations of these views, as well as 3D representations, which was a little more difficult. Then we drew the different views and built models from these views, using plastic blocks. We also looked at the drawings used by architects and the buildings they built in the real world.

Finally, we were given a design brief to build our own house for a toy of our choice. For this task, we had to do a 3D drawing of the house (so that we could show what it would look like) as well as front, side and bird’s eye views to help us with the actual construction. We had to consider things like the size of the toy, facilities and number of rooms we wanted to include, etc. The skills we used included accurate measurement, drawing a model from different perspectives and adding and subtracting when drawing our walls and floors on cardboard.

This project took us nearly the whole term, from the start (looking at 2D shapes and 3D objects and their unique features) to the actual construction and painting of the models. It was a lot of fun because we got the chance to design and build something and because we got to choose the toys we could use.
