Last Friday students in Grades 1-6 were fortunate to experience a chess demonstration lesson with Carl Gorka from Chess Education. It was an overwhelming success with staff and students explaining what an exciting session it was.
As a result of parent feedback, we will offer a paid chess program which will take place on Monday lunchtimes. During these lessons students learn a new strategy, tactic or move. After the formal theory lesson, students play games where their moves are monitored by a software program and players achieve a ‘rating’ (a measure of progress a
gainst performance).
Chess enables students to develop the following skills:
- Problem Solving
- Lateral and logical thinking
- Visualisation
- Memory
- Resilience
This opportunity is open to all students from Foundation – Year 6, regardless of their chess experience and ability.
At the moment, the school has committed to a 13 week program. It will run for three Mondays this term (30th May, 6th June and 20th June) and every Monday next term. The cost is $182 which works out at $14 per session. Parents can pay for this in one instalment of $182 on Friday 27th May, or in two instalments of $95 paid on Friday 27th May and Monday 11th July. Please register your interest and pay via Compass.
